Easy to handle, trim, quick, powerful, are some of the adjectives that describe the Vespa Primavera in the 1960s. The young are the main characters of the spot "Con Vespa si può" ("With Vespa it’s possible") that addresses teens above 16 who love sport and nature, and do not like to get stuck in the traffic and be late for dates with friends.
<span style="color: #373737; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">The Vespa Primavera ET3 is a specific, limited-edition variant (144,000 units were produced overall) of the Vespa “Primavera”. The initials ET3 indicate that the vehicle had electronic ignition and that the engine's single cylinder had a third transfer port. The smaller-sized body, like that of the Vespa 50cc, gave the vehicle more manoeuvrability, a feature that made this Vespa the favourite of 1970s youngsters. The seat the colour of blue jeans of the first few units produced reveals the link between the young and the Primavera ET3. The 125cc ET3's engine resembled the Primavera's from the outside but was much faster and more powerful (7 bhp), so that for a long time it was the speediest Vespa of its category.
Attention to detail has been an integral part of the project right from the start. But when the Vespa 946 moves along the production line, then it really becomes a unique item. From the first stitching on the leather handle grips to the final polish, everything is done by hand, with the same care as a couturier for his creations. From the press shop to the tumble finishing, the attention and passion is that of an artist's atelier. Because a craftsman is an artist.
The new Vespa Primavera represents an important point of evolution in the Vespa story. During the design phase, every solution focused on increasing the level of comfort, safety and driving pleasure compared with the previous (and even recent) generations, continuing an evolution that, for almost 70 years and after more than 18 million vehicles sold over the five continents, makes Vespa the youngest and best-loved two-wheeler in the world.
The minimalist styling of the Vespa S traces its origins back to legendary models like the 50 Special and the Vespa Primavera.

The 1970s began with man landing on the moon and went on to become a decade of extraordinary creativity, a period that revolutionised our way of life.
Fashion, design, cinema, and music, all played a part in transforming once rigid social conventions. Young people discovered a whole new awareness and became the driving force behind social change. The student protest movements that began in the late 1960s went on to shake Europe to the core.
In the cinema, films like Taxi Driver, the Godfather cycle, and the Deer Hunter set new standards. Rock music conquered the world, and grew into a host of genres. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, CSN&Y, and Genesis pioneered new sounds and laid down the sound track to a decade that began with the break-up of the Beatles.

As always, rather than merely following fashion, Vespa led the way in creating new tendencies, and explicitly appealed to the younger generation, the real protagonists of those turbulent yet fertile years.

The Vespa Special and Vespa Primavera became the icons of a generation whose aspirations and conquests were to shape the world for decades to come. Compact, nippy, dynamic, and designed for sports riding, these were the models that inspired so many young people as they burst on to an exciting social scene.

The new Vespa S reflects the same inspirational values, not only in terms of technology, confirming the unbroken link between Vespa and the younger generation.

The style of the Vespa S

Sport, dynamism and originality are the trademarks of the all-new Vespa S. With its clean, essential lines, the Vespa S is a minimalist version of the legendary seventies models, and proof that the young spirit of Vespa is still very much alive.

The handlebar fairing houses a new rectangular headlight. This, of course, is not the first time for a Vespa to feature a rectangular headlight: fans are sure to recall the amazing 50 Special, a favourite with teenagers throughout the fabulous seventies. The front shield is more impressive too, with a new, aggressive looking air intake.
Reduced in size to reveal the layout of the suspension, the new shape mudguard also features a stylish chrome trim for an even sleeker look. The small size of the mudguard leaves the wheel and light alloy rim in full view in a tribute to the performance and high-tech design of the Vespa S.

The element that has seen most change and that characterises the new design is the front shield. Its clean styling recovers the pure lines that have always been the Vespa’s trademark. The shield’s uncluttered surface is fundamental and its simplicity and minimal thickness powerful design features.
The seat is typically ‘70s in styling and is available in two versions: the ‘Sport’, fitted as standard to the Vespa S 50 to enhance its dynamic character, and the ‘Touring’, fitted to the 125 to maximise comfort and usability. Both are available as options and can be fitted to either model. The seat is upholstered in new materials and enhanced with a classy trim that emphasises its stylish shape.
The rear of the Vespa S has an all-new look with a sleek, simple look and a new tail light designed especially to enhance the dynamism of this sporty model.

With its minimalist but decisive styling, simple yet elegant design, the Vespa S features the same dynamism and freshness that made the Vespa the favourite scooter of young people in the roaring seventies.

Frame and chassis: the uniqueness of Vespa

As always, the sheet steel body acts as a structural frame, a design solution that is unique in the world of scooter production. The body is formed in an advanced industrial process. In addition to superior strength, this design also ensures exceptional rigidity, leading to excellent road holding and precision control.
The front suspension, based on a double acting hydraulic shock absorber, stands out for its aeronautical single arm design. Another distinctive feature of all Vespas, since the very first model, this technical solution has been constantly updated. The link arm on the Vespa S pivots on roller cage bearings for minimum friction.
At the rear, the suspension of the new Vespa features a double acting hydraulic shock absorber that, in the 125 version, is even adjustable in preload, offering four possible settings for perfect rider and passenger comfort under all conditions.

The 11” front wheel gives the Vespa S great stability, inspiring the rider with a feeling of confidence and control. The tyres are tubeless, size 110/70 on the front and 120/70 on the 10” rear. The braking system comprises the classic combination of disc and drum. The system features a 200 mm stainless steel front disc with a two piston caliper and a 110 mm rear drum.
The 8.6 litre fuel tank is located inside the body where it does not reduce the size of the under-seat storage compartment, and where it also allows easy access to the engine.

Engines: classical capacities

The Vespa S offers a choice of two classical engines sizes: 50 and 125 cc. The new Vespa museum, called ‘Collezione Vespa Mauro Pascoli” was opened last Saturday in Ravenna, at the Mir di Fornace Zarattini, in the presence of 12,000 people.
Dedicated to the legendary scooter, the museum extends across more than 500 square metres and is part of the “Terra di Motori” group of 12 museums that includes historic bikes and cars. Of the attendance numbers, about 1000 people came from overseas for the opening.
The museum holds more than 150 exhibits of Vespa, Ape and other Piaggio vehicles, 1,500 images of posters, gatherings, photos and brochures and about 200 manuals. The exhibition comes from a private collection of a dealer in parts for vintage Vespas and includes plaques, trophies, catalogues of parts changes, service station manuals, toy models and accessories dating from 1946.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9120517118644522139.post-27142636639215888192008-10-09T00:55:00.000+08:002008-10-09T01:22:27.242+08:00Vespa Musuem
Pontadera, Italy
(at the Piaggio factory)

Has everyone heard of Scooterworks, in Chicago? />At the Piaggio Factory
Pontedera, Italy
By Alan Dollar

Most scooter enthusiasts know the story of Piaggio developing the Vespa after World War II as a means of affordable transportation to aid in the re-construction of war torn Italy. The industrial history of the Piaggio Company actually began sixty years earlier in 1884 when they started making interiors, cabinets and fine woodwork for luxury liners and other sailing ships.

Twenty years later the building of the Italian railroad was becoming a booming industry. The Piaggio Company diversified from woodworking to metal work. In 1908, they started producing a variety of railway cars and streetcars. Detailed, of course, with the same luxury interiors they had designed and produced for ships.

In 1924, they branched out even further, adding an aeronautical division to their company. It was located in Pontedera. To aid the efforts of World War I they produced entire aircraft including engines.

It was during that time that Enrico Piaggio and aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio, the two men who would later be responsible for developing the Vespa motor scooter, joined the company. Piaggio was in the forefront of airplane and engine development with many technical achievements to their credit. Did you know that D’Ascanio, that the man who designed the first Vespa, designed the first successful hovering helicopter in 1930?

Such innovations ended during WW II when the Pontedera factory was demolished by allied bombing. Recovery from this devastation was the driving force that led to the invention of the Vespa!

The first prototype MP5 (Moto Piaggio 5), developed in 1945, became known as the Paperino (Donald Duck). The design did not pass muster with Enrico Piaggio. He directed D”Ascanio to design a innovative vehicle for transportation based on aeronautical concepts. The resulting MP6 was labeled by Enrico as the Vespa because it looked to him like a wasp (vespa in Italian).

The aerodynamics and monocoque (integrated) body were straight from airplane design. The front suspension was designed after the trailing link rear wheel of an airplane’s landing gear. The wheels were mounted on one side of the fork and engine to make it easier to change flat tires. The gears where shifted by twisting the grip where the clutch was located. All of these design innovations were firsts in the field of two-wheel transportation.

That design led to a new direction for the Piaggio Company in 1946, and to the mass production Vespa scooters. It is a design and mechanical icon that has captured the imagination of people around the world for fifty-seven years!

A number of enlightening books have been published in the last few years that include nice pictorial displays of the entire model line of Vespa. After reading all the books and studying all the photos, I, like many others, wanted to see the real thing, in Italy. So, Tony Garbarino and I cashed in our frequent flyer miles for a free flight to the homeland of Vespa, where we set off for a week to see nothing but scooter stuff!

The plan was to see the Piaggio Vespa Museum, some private collections, parts suppliers and finish with the annual swap meet at Novergro. Tony, who knows Italy well, navigated us through his preplanned course like a seasoned rider through a Gymkhana. We did it all in a whirlwind, 8 days, 7 cities, and 6 hotels.

We took one side trip from our scooter path in Pizza, to visit the only cultural site we would see while in Italy. The magnificent leaning tower had just reopened to the public after twelve years of construction to stabilize its tilt. It was a magnificent experience to stand on top of such a historic and beautiful structure. At the same time that I was in awe of my surroundings my mind kept saying, today we see Pontedera. I must be obsessed.

At mid-day we found the sprawling Piaggio factory in Pontedera. The factory complex is larger than I imagined with rows of large concrete buildings, projecting the same appearance as pre war photos. The museum itself fills a small part of one building yet the display seems enormous.

Rolf Soltou, former Piaggio representative to America, told me he was at the factory for a week of training later that month. He was shown almost all aspects of the grand facility. (Wouldn’t it be great to read an article about that experience?)

The first scooters one sees upon arriving are the ones parked in front, ridden to work by the employees. On display outside the scooter museum are a commuter train and airplane, built by Piaggio before WWII.

When we first arrived a chap in Piaggio overalls was outside preparing a newly acquired Vespa for the museum display. The original red Pentaro had been in service as a fire engine! Later during our visit, he drove the Pentaro fire truck into position in the display, complete with original axe, fire hose and siren. I spontaneously gave him and the Pentaro a rousing applause. He seemed pleased by that and motioned at us to follow him into the back room for more unique displays.

The half-day we spent there flew by as if it were minutes. After leaving a lot of money at the museum store and receiving an armload of free goodies and posters, we were ready to embark on the next phase of our journey.

As we walked to the entrance, a side door burst open and the jovial mechanic came out. He stuffed another handful of goodies into my bag and shook my hand. We had made another scooter friend, as so often happens when people who love Vespas meet!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9120517118644522139.post-70504619110027202492008-09-11T04:46:00.000+08:002008-09-10T04:23:25.833+08:00Vespa<table Rinaldo’s business began with luxury ship fitting. But by the end of the century, Piaggio was also producing rail carriages, luxury coaches, truck bodies, engines, and trains.

Early image of the Piaggio & C. factory

With the onset of World War I, the company forged new ground with the production of airplanes and seaplanes. In 1917 Piaggio bought a new plant in Pisa, and four years later it took over a small plant in Pontedera in the Tuscany region of Italy. It was this plant in Pontedera which became its new center for aeronautical production (propellers, engines and complete aircraft).

During World War II, the Pontedera plant built the state-of-the-art P 108 four-engine aircraft, in both passenger and bomber versions. However, the plant was completely destroyed by Allied bombers due to its military importance.

Rebirth

Enrico Piaggio, son of founder Rinaldo Piaggio, surrounded by VespasPiaggio came out of the conflict with its Pontedera plant in complete ruin. Enrico Piaggio was at the helm, having taken over from his father Rinaldo. Concerned about the disastrous state of the roads and the Italian economy, Enrico decided to focus the Company’s attention on the personal mobility needs of the Italian people.

Enter Corradino D’Ascanio, Piaggio’s ingenious aeronautical engineer who designed, constructed and flew the first modern helicopter. D’Ascanio set out to design a simple, sturdy, and economical vehicle that was also comfortable and elegant.

D’Ascanio, who could not stand motorcycles, dreamed up a revolutionary new vehicle. Drawing from the latest aeronautical technology, he imagined a vehicle built on a “monocoque” (French for “single shell”) or unibody steel chassis. Furthermore, the front fork, like a plane’s landing gear, allowed for easy wheel changing. The result was an aircraft-inspired design that to this day remains forward-thinking and unique among all other two-wheeled vehicles.

Upon seeing the vehicle, Enrico Piaggio remarked “Sembra una Vespa!” (“It looks like a wasp!”) This was a real two-wheeled utility vehicle. But it did not resemble an uncomfortable and noisy motorcycle. The steel frame’s shape protected the rider from road dirt and debris. It emanated class and elegance at first glance.

By the end of 1949, 35,000 units had been produced. Italy was getting over its war wounds and getting about on Vespas. In ten years, one million were produced. By the mid-fifties, Vespa was being produced in Germany, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Spain and, of course, Italy.

Vespa logotype

Vespa has lived on from one generation to the next, subtly modifying its image each time. The first Vespa offered mobility to everyone. Then, it became the two-wheeler of the post war economic boom. During the sixties and seventies, the vehicle became a symbol for the revolutionary ideas of the time. Advertising campaigns like “He Who Vespas, eats the apple”, and films such as Quadrophenia have symbolized eras in our history.

Vespa Historical Film (7,45 MB)And the story continues today with the new generation of Vespa models, represented by the Vespa ET2 and Vespa ET4. Vespa is not just a scooter. It is one of the great icons of Italian style and elegance, and with more than 16 million units produced, is well known throughout the world. For more than 50 years, Vespa has fascinated millions of people and given the world an irreplaceable icon of Italian style and a means of personal transport that has become synonymous with freedom.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9120517118644522139.post-7807409329097011632007-07-14T03:07:00.000+08:002007-07-14T03:10:09.262+08:00Manual, How to Restore and Maintain Your Vespa Motorscooter
Bob Darnell's must have book on restoring old Vespas.

Ask a question about Manual, How to Restore and Maintain Your Vespa Motorscooter

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9120517118644522139.post-65843006697700009512007-07-14T03:03:00.000+08:002007-07-14T03:05:00.603+08:001980 Vespa P125X - Dark Blue Immaculate! If you are looking for a Vespa that is both reliable AND vintage, look no further! This model is really very interesting, with its Rally frame, side panels, fender and glovebox, and its 125cc 3 port engine. Comfort and maneuverability are yours with its ten inch wheels with relatively new tires. This scoot has the great big Euro round headlight. Titled. and...that handsome white paint? It's all original, straight from the factory. Zero rust on this bike (anything you see in the floor area in the photo is a shadow...it is totally rust free). That is not something you see every day, and makes this scoot a perfect candidate NOT to restore cosmetically. It is only original once!
This Vespa currently runs, shifts into all gears, and all of the lights are functioning correctly. The tank is clean and the tires are nearly new. However, it is probable that this Vespa will need an engine rebuild at some point in the near future. Give us a call or drop us a note and we can give you more information.

Sorry,Scoot Richmondreally truly does not ship scooters. We will not ship a scooter even if you arrange carriage, even if you build the crate, even if you pay us a million dollars...unless you come and check the scoot out in person before hand. Call us crazy, call us what you will, but that's the way it is.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9120517118644522139.post-46709338706111846532007-07-14T02:47:00.000+08:002007-07-14T02:53:09.277+08:00The Scooter Glove Fitted Cover - P, PX, Stella

This medium duty fitted cover hugs your bike tightly, and goes on and comes off in a flash. Within the trail of their vapor lie a myriad of sweet dreams and misty memories. Somewhere in an old photo album, tucked away in the abyss that is my house, there is a photo of me astride a "Sprint" (the blue model) that belonged to an old boyfriend. He took the picture, which is why I am alone upon it, and also why I lost my balance and fell to the muddy ground just a few seconds afterwards. I still couldn't miss looking pretty classy though; falling off that tapered midsection and landing alongside the flared and rounded tail that inspired its name. Vespa is, after all, the Italian word for wasp, (the stinging kind, and not the human kind).
Italy is known for its unique art forms. Consider going for a family ride aboard a Vespa and crossing the street anywhere in Italy (with or without a Vespa). I have heard older Italians speak of the lean days after World War II when a family of four would pile on board a Vespa. The father was the driver; the mother sat behind him and the children hung on for dear life at both ends. Crossing the street requires just as much skill. There was once an old Italian movie whose entire plot involved a family crossing a busy thoroughfare, one at a time. One day I found myself in the middle of an enormous intersection where the traffic merged from three different directions and showed no signs of slowing down at the red light. I was eating a chocolate ice cream cone and licking on it more and more furiously with each passing second until a carbonieri (policeman) directed me to safety. I went to thank him and some of my ice cream splattered onto his white uniform. I wished I had been on a Vespa then to zoom away forever out of his sight and my embarrassment.

The Vespas and their arch rival scooter, the Lambretta, have been pounding cobblestone and macadam all over the world for more than half a century. The manufacturers of Vespa commemorated their fiftieth anniversary in 1996 with a gala on The Italian Riviera and the grand opening of a Vespa museum at their corporate headquarters, near Pisa. Their revival in the United States has been a slow but steady cultural phenomenon. These two-wheeled equivalents to the Volkswagen Beetle are seen as often in advertisements and television commercials as they are buzzing up and down the streets of New York City. According to the US representative to the International Federation of Vespa Clubs, Rolf Soltau, there are currently forty-eight Vespa clubs throughout the United States that boast a membership of more than two thousand.

The Vespa has a unique style that blends mobility with simplicity. It is as Italian as Spaghetti ala Carbonara and could be nothing else- ever! A masterpiece worthy of respect and rounded in shape, it is said, because the Piaggio plant wanted the scooter to resemble the chassis of a "good looking woman". Chauvinist? Well, as an American woman who lived among Italian men for more than two years I would have to say, "Yes, it is." There is also no doubt about the artistry and brilliance of the design.

The scooters were originally made by the Piaggio plant in 1946, which to this day still holds more than 40% of the small scooter market in Europe. The company was originally involved in the manufacture of aircraft before being nearly destroyed in World War II. Evidence of aircraft design can be found in the Vespa's rear wheel mounting and single sided front fork that were both typical of landing gear in the airplanes of the time. The Vespa's timeless engineering was the brainchild of Enrico Piaggio, president of the family run metal company and Corradino D'Ascanio, an industrial engineer who helped develop the helicopter. The scooters were cool then as a symbol of the reconstruction of war-torn Italy and they are cool now.

Crossing the threshold into permanent celebrity was certainly helped when the Vespa was used to transport Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in the 1953 film, "Roman Holiday". The scooter was also featured in "La Dolce Vita" starring Anita Ekberg and alongside the likes of John Wayne and Sandra Dee in many old publicity shots. Cult status was finally achieved in the 1960s with the success of "Quadrophenia," the biggest scooter movie ever made.

The Vespas have become a way of life, representing just the right blend of urban efficiency, Italian elegance and unmistakable panache. They have even carved a niche in the dictionary, which is a true sign of cultural acceptance. One might remember Diane Arbus, the troubled photographer of the 60s and 70s and whose subjects were always quite disturbing and bizarre. The word "arbus" came to symbolize those two qualities to old Mr. Webster. Well, "vespiti" for Mr. Webster's Italian counterpart represents those who are a part of the Vespa lifestyle and "vespazzare" is a verb which has come to mean: "going somewhere on a vespa."

Vespa sales rose steadily until the 1980s. This was due to their two stroke engines that did not meet emission standards. None have been imported since then which deems all remaining Vespas as "vintage." The 15-40-year old scooters in the United States are becoming more and more valuable and harder and harder to find. Most need some rejuvenation but, as an aging beautiful woman, they still retain the essence of what they once were. The Piaggi plant has introduced a new brand of Vespa for a new generation, but it remains as big a difference as that between a diamond and a zircon. The newer ones are called ET-4. (No, it is not another sweet little alien with a new number to phone home, but maybe it should be!)

The new Vespas are all segregated into service only or "vintage" shops. These stores are not allowed to sell the new Vespas and for that one must visit, I am afraid, what can only be termed a "Vespa Boutique". Even then, they are hard to find except on the black market. Although these ET-4's have received rave reviews, they are just not the same as their older counterparts. Cities such as New York where Vespa enthusiasts still congregate for frequent excursions will never be the same either. I wish them all a happy zooming a to wherever it is that fools rush in and wise men (and not so wise men) fear to tread. Long live the Vespa for it is still…the… besta!!

(Vintage Scooter Commercials)

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9120517118644522139.post-40699652780548644302007-06-15T06:03:00.000+08:002007-06-15T15:18:59.736+08:00Nissan Figaro Retro Car 1.0 Turbo

The Figaro is Nissan's exciting concept car.
